Home Secretary Theresa May has said the EU must do more to help refugees crossing the Mediterranean for a better life.
Risking their very existence, the refugees are escaping from war, poverty and ethnic cleansing.
'It is essential we show compassion' said May.
'These people can't be left to fend for themselves. They'll drown. They are human beings. We must do something about it.'
She continued 'Of course we are too far north to help. Our navy these days consists of a Gin Palace and a small rowing boat.'
'But those of you in the south, Italy, Spain, France and those exotic former Yugoslav places with their cool post-genocide vibe, you can help them all.'
Asked about whether Britain was at least willing to take its fair share of the refugees Ms. May said
'Is that the time? I'm late for lunch. Prior engagement you understand. I no speaky English.'
